摘要

The recent recession of Lake Oahe exposed formerly submerged--and nowresubmerged, intact site areas adversely affected by pothunting on the southwest side of the village, that had never before been professionally evaluated. The investigations addressed primarily, in 1992, the effects of lake recession and evaluation of the ARPA trial pothunting; in 1993, the remains of houses and associated paleosols in the conservation pool cutbank on the northeast side of the village: Pothunting still continues; the ARPA ease involved Fort Yates phase materials; the final (Terminal Variant, post Fort Yates phase) village burned sometime in the 14th or early 15th centuries AD; and the most likely cause of village destruction is warfare with Coalescent Tradition peoples. The notable events of prehistory are posited to be in response to changing climate and population-related stress within the Middle Missouri subarea and more generally throughout the Central and Northern Plains. Short-and long-term cultural resource management needs require an aggressively conducted, proactive program of lake shore inspection, public education, and further systematic archaeological investigation.
