The local compressibilities around the trivalent substitutional impurities Cr3+ and Fe3+ in MgO crystals have been studied by analyzing the pressure dependence of optical and EPR spectra for MgO:Cr3+ and MgO:Fe3+. It is found that the local compressibilities of CrO69- and FeO69- octahedral clusters in MgO are smaller than the compressibility in pure (or host) MgO crystal, but they show good agreement with the corresponding compressibility in pure Cr2O3 and Fe2O3 crystals where Cr3+ and Fe3+ are the trivalent host ions.
