We have developed an apparatus for the direct measurement of forces on superconducting vortices. Our probe uses a single-crystal-silicon mechanical oscillator as a sensing element; the magnetic flux is applied locally near the center of a superconducting single crystal. The motion of the flux is controlled by a tube piezo, enabling studies of both longitudinal and transverse forces. We demonstrate the apparatus by studying the crossover from pinning to viscous motion of vortices in YBa2Cu3O7-delta (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [References: 2]
