摘要

The decline of European beech has been reported in Poland since the mid-1980s. The majority of observations suggest that abiotic factors, Cryptococcus fagisuga and pathogenic fungi are the likely cause of the disease. Several pathogens are regarded asbeech decline-causing agents including species of Nectria, Phytophthora, Armillaria and Hypoxylon. Recently, Chalara ovoidea was also found on discolored beech planks and on necroses of tree stems in Poland (Kraj and Kowalski 2005). Fungi from the genusChalara include important plant pathogens such as Thielaviopsis basicola (syn. Chalara elegans) (Harrington 1993) and Chalara fraxinea (Kowalski and Holdenrieder 2009) or sapstain fungi. Information about the possible role of Ch. ovoidea in the processof dying of European beech is lacking.
