Phonon band structures with arbitrary frequency-dependent interactions

A simple and general resonant-amplitude algorithm is proposed to treat lattice dynamical problems with arbitrary frequency-dependent interactions among sites. The algorithm can be used even if an explicit analytic expression for the frequency-dependent interaction is not known, but rather specific values at certain frequencies are available. The model is explicitly shown for a few simple examples and some of its consequences are inquired into. Several possible applications of the model are proposed to deal with retardation effects and Coulomb interactions in lattice dynamical problems. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
