Tunnel-coupled double quantum wires in a magnetic field: electron scattering on impurities and boundary roughness

The electron scattering and localization in tunnel-coupled double quantum wires (DQW) in a magnetic field with disorder due to random impurities and boundary roughness is studied. It is shown that in the partial energy gap formed in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field the scattering on pairs of scatterers located in the opposite wires at small distances from each other exhibits the giant interference effect. It consists in the dramatic enhancement of reflection from such pairs with respect to isolated scatterers. The interference effect is shown to play an important role in disordered DQWs leading to the strong dependence of localization length on parameters of disorder, and, in particular, the interwire correlations in disorder. The obtained results are discussed in connection with the possibility of the localization-delocalization transition in disordered DQWs (Phys. Rev. B 60 (1999) 13770). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
