We have analyzed the recent experimental data on the normal-state thermoelectric power of high-temperature superconducting cuprates. It is demonstrated that both temperature dependence and sign of the Seebeck coefficient of different HTS families may find a consistent interpretation within the scope of a model based on phonon renormalization of the Seebeck coefficient in the presence of substitutional disorder. The obtained results shed light on the mechanisms of normal-state transport phenomena in high-temperature superconducting cuprates. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. [References: 8]
