Seed and Seedling Morphology in Cheilocostus speciosus(Costaceae)

Seed and seedling morphology of Cheilocostus speciosus (J. Koenig) CD. Specht have been studied using light microscope (LM) and scanning electronmicroscope (SEM). For seed, cuneiform-shape with striate surface, orbicular operculum, terminal presence of circular hilum with acute apex are the important characters. Phanerocotylar, epigeal, remotive germination pattern, assimilatory blade-like hypophyll with orbicular-obovate shape, elliptic-oblong or elliptic-obovate first leaf, long hypocotyl, etc. arethe significant observations of seedlings. The seed and seedling characters as studied in this investigation are important as taxonomic markers for identification purpose.
