DURING the first half of 1994, Chris Isham and I organized a programme on geometry and gravity at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge. One of its principal themes was the fate of space and time in quantum theories of gravity, and two of the participants, Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, were persuaded to deliver a series of lectures, culminating in a public debate on the nature of space and time. The lectures were intended for a general university audience and, as one might imagine given the reputations of the speakers, the hall was packed.
