Measurement of levels in bins, hoppers, bunkers and silos, particularly in the case of unit bunkers in coal fired power stations, is necessary to schedule filling and to avoid maximum and minimum levels being exceeded. With power station bunkers, which invariably operate in core flow, the surface profile changes as the level falls and the surface profile is dependent on: bunker/feeder design, lining material, conditions of the bunker and the flow characteristics of the coal or coal/solid biofuel mix. The fuel may tend to drop preferentially to one side or corner, usually above the feeder inlet. A far more dangerous situation is where ratholes (almost vertical pipes) appear due to the handling of very wet cohesive coals and alternative fuels. These pipes can quickly reach the feeder and permit "blow-back" of hot gases from the mill. In the past a wide range of devices have been used, particularly ultrasonics. With core flow bunkers, however, only laser scanning devices can relate to volume and tonnage stored and give a meaningful warning of "blow-backs".
