Spike sequences of in-vivo cortical neurons are highly irregular. Recently, Softky and Koch addressed the question of the suitability of the integrate-and-fire model for the spiking mechanism in the light of spiking irregularity. We consider real neuronal spike sequences and examine whether this model is really unsatisfactory for explaining actual data. It is found that the leaky integrate-and-fire model is not completely inconsistent with the real data. Detailed analysis, however, shows a need for modifications of the model. [References: 5]
