Allan Harvey Brown,Emeritus Professor,Biology Department,University of Pennsylvania,died on May 24,2004. His investigative science career was woven around the roles of O_2 in biology, first in terrestrial life forms such as plants and humans, then inmanned space travel and finally in probing for possible extraterrestrial life.This career-long fascination with O_2 and biology was kindled by his graduate training in plant physiology,his thesis work on respiration,assisting in the Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry to study high temperature physiology of humans in desert and jungle environments,and during postgraduate work when he became skilled at mass spectrometry measurements of O_2 and CO_2 .
