Shenhua Starts 1st Chinese Plant For PP from Coal-Based Olefins

Beijing-Shenhua Group's Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemicals Co. has started up China's first polypropylene (PP) plant from coal-generated olefins (PCN, 16-23 Aug 2010, p 1). The 300,000-t/y facility, located in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, utilizes Dove's Unipol PP technology. The project converts coal into a synthesis gas to produce methanol. The methanol is then transformed into olefins for the production of PP. The PP unit is part of a complex that also includes the production of 300,000 t/y each of ethylene, propylene and polyethylene.
