St. Louis-Solutia announced that effective 31 Mar. 2009, it will focus solely on the production of Butvar polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resin at its Saflex plant in Trenton, Mich., and, at the same time, stop production of Saflex PVB interlayers at the site. "Demand (for interlayers) in Europe and Asia has grown faster than the rest of the world, resulting in excess North American capacity and necessitating this action," said Luc De Temmerman, senior vice president of Solutia and president of Saflex.
