American Acryl Hit by Explosion At Bayport Acrylic Acid Facility

Houston-American Acryl, an equally owned joint venture of Atofina Chemicals and Nippon Shokubai's NA Industries, has closed its 120,000-t/y acrylics acid plant at Bayport, Texas, following a 9 Dec. explosion at the site. The cause of the explosion, which occurred in a tank containing toluene, is being investigated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. No "off-site toxic impact" was reported.
