A study was undertaken on the effectiveness of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) probe trap for the management of insect pests of stored rice in Pallapalayam Village, Palladam in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. There was good amount of insect infestation in the rice stored in the village. Two species namely red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum and saw toothed beetle, Oryzhaephillus surinamensis occurred in rice storage. Reduced insect population and grain loss was found in bins with traps. A savingof around 2 per cent rice grain in a period of 3 months with reduced insect population is the significant outcome of the feed back study. The farmers are unable to identify the presence of insects in their stored grain at initial stages and only when there is severe damage they can note the presence of insects. TNAU probe trap served as a good early detection device of insects in grain storage for varied storage conditions.
