This magazine has been to a lot of off-road races over the years. We've seen Baja, Dakar, Pikes Peak, and maybe even your local mud bog. But when the Pentagon announced that its Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) would be holding a race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with autonomous vehicles last spring-that was something we had never seen before.
