Profenofos, a potential insecticide against tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner)

Field efficacy of profenofos was evaluated against the tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) in Tamil Nadu, India. Profenofos 50 EC @ 1.5 lit/ha was found superior in reducing the larval population and increasing the yield than the combination of profenofos 40 EC with cypermethrin 4 EC, cypermethrin and dichlorvos alone. When assayed for ovicidal and larvicidal activity in the laboratory, profenofos at 0.30 percent caused maximum mortality of eggs and larvae than other chemicals tried. Though profenofos + cypermethrin performed moderately better, cypermethrin when sprayed alone was least effective, both in the field and laboratory.
