EVALUATION OF A FEW HERBICIDES FOR THE CONTROL OF WEEDS IN COTTON

A field experiment was conducted at MARS, Zirakpur during the Kha.if season of 1994 to evaluate the bioefficacy of a few herbicides against weeds in cotton. The herbicides, namely, flumeturon, fluchloralin, pendimethalin and trifluralin were comparedfor their efficacy in controlling the weeds. Among the above herbicides flumeturon was found to be the most effective against both narrow leaved and broad leaved weeds, but it caused phytotoxicity to cotton in all the three doses tested (1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 kg ai/ha). Pendimethalin, fluchloralin and trifluralin were also very effective in controlling weeds in cotton at doses 0.75, 1.20 and 0.80 kg ai/ha respectively. They did not produce any phytotoxic symptom. Plots treated with pendimethalin, fluchloralin and trifluralin recorded increased seed cotton yield compared to control plots.
