Tumor metabolic imaging has focused largely on the use of positron emission tomography (PET) with ~18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), because many cancers are highly glycolytic even in aerobic conditions. However, some cancers do not consistently exhibit increased FDG uptake, and therefore imaging of other metabolic pathways, such as amino acid or lipid metabolism, has been explored in cancer. Prostate cancer exhibits increased glycolysis frequently only in late stages of the disease. However, several studies have shown that lipid metabolism is increased even in early stages of the disease. The lipogenic pheno-type of prostate cancer can be imaged, among others, with ~11C-acetate PET.In the 2007 "Cancer Trends Progress Report," the National Cancer Institute reported 165 new cases of prostate cancer per 100,000 men per year. The lifetime chance for developing prostate cancer is approximately 15%, with the cancer risk increasing sharply with age.
