Report recommends funding for safer chemistry and chemical security: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should support research to improve the security of the nation's chemical infrastructure and to encourage and expedite the use of safer chemical processes, according to a reportreleased last week by the National Research Council (NRC). The report examines the vulnerabilities in the chemical supply chain and concludes new technologies and more effective communication with the public are critical for the federal government to minimize the possibility or consequences of a terrorist attack on the nation's chemical infrastructure. Titled "Terrorism and the Chemical Infrastructure: Protecting People and Reducing Vulnerabilities," the report was requested in 2004 by DHS, which asked NRC to analyze how the agency could best target funds to improve chemical security.
