Toxicity testing vision:faster,less costly,and more relevant-within 20 years

A National Research Council (NRC) report released last week calls for major investments to take toxicity testing into a new era,with fundamental changes to the way the risk to human health posed by chemicals is assessed.The new approach,based on recent advances in biosciences,would overcome many of the shortcomings of current testing strategies.It would eliminate most animal testing,thereby cutting the time required to assess a chemical's toxicity,lowering costs,and increasing the number of chemicals and the range of exposure levels that can be assessed.It would also provide results that are more relevant to human physiology and health at realistic exposure levels.
