Assess risks of nanoproducts say experts and environmentalists

Scientific experts and environmentalists last week called for the health and environmental safety of nanotechnology products to be reviewed under protocols designed for their special characteristics.In a report published last week,Friends of the Earth (FoE) called for classification of nanoparticles of silver (nanosilver) as hazardous waste and subjecting the use of nanosilver in consumer products to tough new safety tests.A Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars' Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies report,also published last week,sets out a framework for life cycle assessment (LCA) of any nanotechnology application,including the nanosilver applications that concern FoE.
