Laboratory studies were conducted on degradation of insecticides viz., carbofuran, quinalphos and phorate in natural water samples collected from the Nilgiris District in comparison with distilled water and natural water+CCl4 The dissipation behaviour of insecticides in water followed first order kinetics in all the treatments. Among the three insecticides, phorate residues degraded at faster rate and the half life values were high for quinalphos (3.93 to 4.88 d) followed by carbofuran (2.24 to 3.00 d) and phorate (1.77 to 2.13 d) in various treatments. The degradation of residues was more in natural water than in distilled water and natural water+CCl4 irrespective of the dose.
