Manufacturers are using new, shorter chain perfluorinated chemicals in place of the contentious longer chain versions like PFOA and PFOS, Chemical & Engineering News reports in its Feb. I issue.The compounds provide the same functional properties as their longer predecessors so they can be used in the same large variety of applications, including non-stick pots and pans, stain-resistant carpeting, water-repellent clothing, cable insulation and fire extinguishing foam. But while they are just as persistent as longer chain versions, they are not as bioaccumulative and so far appear to be less toxic.
