Established in 1986 to explore and exploit the brines of the Solar de Atacama in northern Chile, Minsal (today a wholly-owned subsidiary of SQM) saw production of its first KCl in 1995. Today, the company produces over 350,000 tla of high quality KCl,which when new capacity comes onstream next year and in 1999, will increase to 500,000 tla. Minsal is also adding potassium sulphate to its product range, with the start-up of a 250,000 tla plant this January, and is continuing to invest in other areas, notably lithium carbonate.
