Phosphoric acid plants are revamped for a variety of reasons: to replace old equipment, to introduce new technology, to increase capacity or to adapt to new rock sources. The main focus is usually on the reactor and its associated cooling system and the filter with its associated vacuum system. Phosphorus & Potassium reviews the options. Like many other chemical production facilities, phosphoric acid plants comprise a wide variety of components with greatly varying operational life. Some components are replaced regularly throughout the plants' working life. But others, such as the reaction system itself, filters, vacuum equipment, tanks and other vessels, last much longer. Often constructed in concrete, the reaction system may last thirty years or more with little attention, and is usually the longest lasting of all the components.
