The Senate last week defeated a measure that would require hazardous chemical rail shipments to be rerouted around high-density population areas,but the House Homeland Security Committee unanimously approved separate legislation containing a similar measure.Sen.Joe Biden (D-Del.) introduced the requirement as an amendment to S.4,which is a bill to implement the 9-11 Commission's recommendations (see PTCN,March 12,Page 16).The Senate March 13 rejected the amendment by a vote of 73-25.
