Health of seedlings, cuttings and young ornamental plants under greenhouse multiplication.

This is the first of three papers in a feature on plant multiplication, and is a general discussion of the health (in terms of the incidence of pests and diseases) of seedlings, cuttings and young plants of ornamental species under greenhouse conditions. The paper has 4 main sections, which examine: (1) factors influencing the health of young plants (seed quality, cutting and graft quality, the primary sources of pests and diseases, the biotope, the biocoenose, cultural methods); (2) monitoring the health of young plants; (3) the principal pests and diseases of seedlings, cuttings and young plants under cover; (4) and an integrated approach to plant protection which considers the quality of the plant material, cultural methods and prophylaxis and biological and chemical control methods.
