European Commission pushes on with GM risk assessment law

The European Commission is pushing ahead with plans to turn risk assessment guidelines for genetically modified organisms into a binding EU regulation despite industry opposition to the move.The plan aims to smash the constant deadlocks between member states that mean there is never a qualified majority in favor of proposals to authorize GMOs either in the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health or the Council of Ministers.These deadlocks come despite the products having a positive risk assessment from the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA).
