Perennials for cut flowers: choosing specialists.

The future of cut flower production is discussed in view of the significant increase in prices of fuels. The possibility of continuing production of cut flowers choosing less costly cultivation methods, such as production of perennials in unprotected soil, and in less heated or unheated conditions, such as plastic tunnels. Criteria recommended for choosing perennials for production of cut flowers are considered, such as ease of cultivation, decorative and possible fragrance factors, as well as good vase life. Information is included on soil and climate requirements of popular perennials, such as Delphinium, Scabiosa and Paeonia. Recommended decorative aspects, the best harvesting time and preservation techniques (e.g. use of preservative solutions) are considered. It is stated that choice perennials are available at specialist nurseries. Descriptions and illustrations are provided of particularly interesting perennials..
