This cosmopolitic genus comprises some 1,250 species, it is often cultivated as an ornamental. Alkaloids are prevalent throughout the genus. Several species are toxic to stock, especially, S. jacobaea. Common medicinal properties are reported to be anti-tumoural, emmenagogue, anti-inflammatory, emetic, anurheumatic, vulnerary, expectorant, etc. A leaf and stem decoction of S. lamarckianus is administered against coughs and influenza, while a leaf and root poultice is used for eczemas. Decoctions of the whole plant are drunk against dysentery and fever.
