All over Europe lightweight aggregate concrete is gaining in importance. The development in the area of concrete technology for realising outstanding concrete constructions like floating oil platforms has brought up concretes with densities in between normal and lightweight concrete. Those are produced by using blends of normal aggregate and lightweight aggregate. Lightweight aggregates cause higher expenses in comparison with normal aggregates. This leads to considerations about optimising the composition of concrete and necessitates the use of lightweight aggregates in a most efficient way The scientific background of the bearing and deformation performance of different concretes which is outlined in this article forms the basis for an optimal lightweight aggregate concrete mixture.
