Powering up with hydro

The majority of hydroelectricity generated in the Czech Republic is produced by domestic operator CEZ. Of the country's total installed capacity of 1,056 MW, CEZ accounted for some 723 MW in 2010, according to Pavel Gebauer, head of the Support of Renewable Energy Sources section at the Czech Ministry of Industry. He also notes that hydropower plants not run by CEZ (for example, several are operated by E.ON of Germany) tend to be very small, with a capacity of no more than 5 MW at most. Moreover, the majority of the plants are often located far away from the main centres of power consumption, ie the cities.
