Whilst there are immediate human, environmental and financial costs of these incidents, we are seeing consequential impacts upon the reputations and value of the companies involved and the industry as a whole. In addition, senior executives are being called to account in public, with extensive international media coverage. The incidents have inevitably led to increased scrutiny by stakeholders, such as governments, regulators and insurers. In addition, institutional investors are questioning the security of their investments in the high hazard industries.
