The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) hope of regulating greenhouse gas emissions is putting a damper on investment in new coal plants in the US, writes Pacifica Goddard. However, there is some hope that coal could become clean enough to cohabit with future US emissions rules through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology and tests are now underway to demonstrate its effectiveness. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), operated by the Battelle Memorial Institute, is gearing up to do just that in a basalt formation at the Boise White Paper Mill property in Wallula, Washington state, on the Pacific coast.
