Something unusual is happening in North America's electricity sector. Over the past few years, the majority of electricity has been supplied by coal (around 49%) and nuclear (21 %). Natural gas accounts for around 19% - on an average day, a little less than 19bn cf is burned. The majority of the remaining electricity is provided by renewables, which are expected to meet most of the growth in demand in the coming years.
