The European Union (EU) is helping the US deal with the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, reports Keith Nuthall. Coordinated by the EU's emergency response group, the Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC), the EU will send oil skimmers and oil spill experts to the Gulf. The European Maritime Safety Agency, Spain and the Netherlands have also offered help. EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva said the EU would 'stand shoulder to shoulder' with the US over the spill. Meanwhile, the European Space Agency's Envisat radar satellite has been monitoring the resulting slick.
