All oil exploration activities offshore Guyana ceased in June 2000, when Surinamese gunboats blocked a rig owned by CGX Energy, a Canadian company, from drilling in the Eagle location licensed to it by Guyana. Suriname contended that the maritime boundary, which was drawn along a line bearing 10° east of true north from the low water mark for three miles, should continue along the same trajectory until it reached the 200-mile mark of the Exclusive Economic Zones claimed by both countries.
