The Energy Institute (El) and the Joint Inspection Group (JIG) have drawn up a new standard for handling aviation fuel to provide minimum requirements for the maintenance of fuel quality upstream of airports, The more aviation fuel is transferred between modes of transport, the more susceptible the fuel is to degradation by dirt and water entering the fuel mix. This can lead to the fuel becoming off-specification, and in extreme cases could lead to technical difficulties for aeroplanes flying using degraded fuel, with potentially fatal consequences.
