Gravity separation is becoming an increasingly important technique for gold recovery both in South Africa and worldwide. A South African company has introduced new Russian gravity separation equipment which can treat a wide range of grades and sizes. Ian Robinson visited the Krugersdorp plant where the equipment is undergoing trials and spoke to the Russian architects of the technology. Russian gravity separation technology could enable South African gold producers to improve their recoveries. The ITOMAK technology was developed by a group of Russian scientists and trials in South Africa have shown that ITOMAK gravity separators can achieve very high recoveries over a wide range of grades and particle sizes.
