Originating from the in-house design product of Avions Marcel Dassault, the French aircraft manufacturer, Catia's design software package was, in the beginning, run off a computer that filled a large room. Until recently, a potent mainframe was required to run the package, but continuous development by IBM led to Catia version 5 that can now run on a standard PC by a single user in any small engineering concern.
