Opening Doors for Heavy Engineering

A new drill rig platform was recently undergoing final pre delivery trials in Saldanha Bay harbour before delivery to its Brazilian client and final commissioning, when engineers discovered that the hydraulic cylinders and accumulators on the compensators had been damaged by grit that formed due to air getting into the cylinder and forming a fine. Components for the rig were built by several international specialist manufacturers and finally assembled in Abu Dhabi, in a joint venture. This meant the eight thirteen and a half tonne compensators would have to be removed and sent back to France to the original equipment manufacturer for refurbishment and repair prior to commissioning.
