Industry alone isn't to blame for the pollution of the underground water, it's the responsibility of each individual, however small the contribution, to make sure they don't add to the threat of contaminating the environment. Every oil spill, even in your backyard or in the veld behind your factory, adds to the contamination of underground water. According to a report by the Rose Foundation, it is estimated that approximately 10 million used oil filters are generated every year in South Africa. Most of these find their way onto our landfill sites. As they constitute hazardous waste product, they should be collected and recycled, not just thrown away.
