Given the proliferation of industrial gearboxes of all shapes, sizes, prices and types on the market, South African design engineers don't often get the opportunity to design a gearbox from scratch. For veteran gearbox design engineer, Ron Wakeford of Hypersonic Engineering & Gear Cutting, it was thus a fresh new challenge when the company was approached by a South African OEM recently to design a whole new gearbox for a crusher application. "SA Mechanical Engineer" visits the company's workshop in Benoni to talk to owner, Herman van Rooyen. "Ron, who has been designing industrial gearbox components for over thirty years, joined us a couple of years ago and being well-known in the industry, drew the enquiry to build a custom-made gearbox for a particular crusher model," Herman explains. "The first one has just been built and we hope to market it to the mining industry for other applications as well.
