Historically, Latin American heavy crude oil headed to the US Gulf Coast (USGC) for refining. However, this could change with growing Asian demand and increasing Canadian production. Wood Mackenzie analysts anticipate that demand growth in Asia could be so large that global demand for heavy crude could outpace supply. Consequently light heavy crude differentials will remain narrow and the target location for heavy oil processing could change significantly.
