It is claimed that biofuels alone could reduce the ever-growing carbon emissions from the UK transport sector by up to 60%.In the latest budget, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown set the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation(RTFO)at 2.5% in 2008-2009 and 3.75% in 2009-2010.He also maintained the biofuels duty incentive at 20 pence per litre(p/l)in 2008-2009 and announced that the price paid by fuel suppliers who fail to meet their obligation will be set at 15 p/l.However,these decisions in support of biofuels and the RTFO 'risk failing to deliver significant savings in carbon emissions from transport and undermine the UK's fledgling biofuels industry',according to the Environmental Industries Commission(EIC).
