Tough exhaust emission controls have provided an incentive for shipping companies to adopt LNG as a clean fuel since the ferry Glutra pioneered this complex technology in 2000. The LNG-fuelled fleet now includes ferries, offshore supply vessels, tugs and river barges, shortly to be joined by container ships, ice-breakers and a dredger. According to DNV GL, 120 LNG fuelled ships were in operation or on Order worldwide (excluding LNG carriers) in 2014.
