Silicones in new pharmaceutical developments, from formulations to manufacturing processes

Silicones are synthetic polymers containing Si-0 siloxane bonds. Their synthesis, properties and analysis have been described elsewhere (1-3). The most common polymers are polydimethyl-siloxanes (PDMS) of the structure shown in Figure 1, where the strongly polar backbone of Si-0 bonds is shielded by organic methyl groups.
