The tanker market's performance between 2011 and 2014 left no doubt that this was an industry in serious trouble (see Figure 1). VLCC (very large crude carrier) freight rates averaged less than $20,000/d for this period - not much for covering operating and financial costs for a $100mn asset. Clearly, this was a market in very poor condition.
